Rain

img_1835 img_1836 img_1839What mischief! Our hike 25 was a wet one. Glacier Hills County Park was really lovely. We did the 1.08 mile loop. Half the time was spent running through puddles and stomping. The other half we washed our hands in dirty water or dragged sticks around. We had so much fun.

Total Mileage: 48.5

A Winding Sheet for Summer

A long hike. Ah! 10 miles today. 10 miles carrying only my own weight. 10 miles of friendship and womanhood and laughter and on and on. This is what it feels like to be weightless. Hike 24 was all for me. img_0431 img_0433 img_0434

There were mushrooms the size of my face. And two giant puffball mushrooms that were the size of my absent children. I’ve never seen mushrooms that large.

“The sun was a golden rag nailed to a ladder.
And here the marigolds grow down to the banks.
The mayflies drowse above water.
How then the dazzling surface and its dictions
     under piled clouds,
and clouds sitting there by place and sound.
One thing. This thing and sound glitters.
Indicative transitive particular battles the void.
All afternoon a green-gold silent light
on the spotted grass, sprung.” -Peter Gizzi

Rock Me, Mercy

We completed hike 23! Graham, Warren and I added 3.4 miles to our total mileage.

We walked with our friends, which really helped to keep Graham motivated. He walked almost the whole way. Of course, the one tandem carry session was going up the largest hill on the trail. But isn’t that the way of things?img_0421

Our friends introduced us to a love of mushrooms. We’ve been noticing them all over now.

img_0425Note to self: carry fewer things! Even with the ‘long’ hike, I didn’t use half of what I brought. I’m starting to just double up Warren’s diapers and not worry about changing them on the trail. Graham only ate one of the snack bags and we ate the rest for lunch once we were back to the car, so there was really no reason for me to carry them.

Total mileage: 47.5

“The river stones are listening
because we have something to say.
The trees lean closer today.
The singing in the electrical woods
has gone dumb. It looks like rain
because it is too warm to snow.
Guardian angels, wherever you’re hiding,
we know you can’t be everywhere at once.”  -Yusef Komunyakaa

Nothing is Far

I’ve been driving past Bong Recreation Area for years. I’ve been missing a great gem. We had a fantastic time on hike 22.img_8952

Graham, Warren and I were joined by my mom and sisters: Aidan, Kate, and Dawn. We walked 1.7 miles. It was a bit misty and threatening to rain. Luckily, the rain held off and was refreshing instead of drenching. img_8953

Bong Recreation Area had some nice views of the prairie as well as a little lake. It looks like it would be a great winter trail as well. They had a set up for a sled run that looked wicked.img_8954

One of the best things about this hike was my new shoes! I ordered Salomon trail runners as my hiking shoe of choice (on sale!) They work perfectly.

Total Mileage: 44.1 miles

Hike 21: SSDD

img_8939 img_8941 img_8942There isn’t a lot to say about this hike. It’s one of our favorite spots and we come here so much. I feel almost silly including it. But for this week it was our mile. It is special to see how diverse the wildlife is, and how much it changes from hike to hike.

Total Mileage: 42.4

September 30 Hike it Baby Challenge

We’ve been participating in a Hike it Baby Challenge. The goal is to hike 30 miles in 30 days or spend 30 minutes outside for 3 days a week. We haven’t been hitting our mileage goals (not even close) but we have been getting so much outdoor time. I’ve been playing catch up for posting my hikes. img_0443

There and Then

While not part of the 52 hike challenge (we only walked a half mile) we did have a great time kicking off the Hike30 Hike it Baby Challenge. We headed to Schlitz Audobon Nature Center. It was a gloriously, perfectly, marvelous day.
